I had the pleasure of having lunch with one of the dopest creators of our time, Keane Dasalla, otherwise known as
Dashes Clay. I refer to him as a creator because he's a rapper (
Beautiful Music, Baby), a photographer, and as of late a music visual director. He gave me the opportunity to interview him today. He's a real humble, down to earth guy.
Where are you from?
I'm from Union City. That's where we grew up.
When did you start rapping?
I started way back in '99. I remember me and my boys would meet up at our friend MikeOne's house on Fridays and we'd have cyphers in his garage. Back then it was all about just freestyling and seeing what the dopest rhymes we could come up with right then and there were. From that point on I fell in love with the aspect of being able to get in that mode and play with words to make something great.
How did you transition from Music to Photography?
It was easy to transition because they both give me that freedom to create. The only difference for me is that in Music there's more time involved 'til you get that finished product, but with Photography I mean you can take a thousand pictures a day if you really wanted to.
Did you go to school for any of this?
No, but I'm a very studious person. If something really interests me I'll spend countless hours figuring it all out. With music I would look at the lines on a piece of paper as bars and I'd split 'em up and try to figure out how I could say something different and make it sound better or how the first part of this line would sound with the first part of the line after that. With my Photography I was always looking at the style and technique of Photographers I liked, like what f/stop they were shooting at and the lighting and composition and all that. I learned to mimic different styles until I'd developed a style of my own. A lot of hard work and thought goes into anything I do.
How did you start working with Erk Tha Jerk?
I pretty much met him through working with
IMPRM. I went out to Atlanta to document his time at the AC3 Music Festival. We stayed in contact for a bit afterwards and eventually transitioned into shooting some music videos for him. First being "Ha Ha" then
Reach The Top.
Who are you listening to right now?
Big K.R.I.T., Curren$y and Erk is in constant rotation on my desktop and in my car.
Any upcoming projects you can talk about?
Yeah I got Knocka Knock's "Throw On A Beat" going up tomorrow actually, and Erk's video for "Favorite Song" is wrapped up and waiting to be released.
